Creatine enhances physical performance during short, repeated, high-intensity exercise when taken in doses of at least 3 grams per day.
Creatine (methylguanidine acetate) was first isolated from meat in 1832 by the French chemist and philosopher Michele Eugene Chevreul. He named his discovery “creatine” after the Greek word kreas, meaning meat.2
Approximately 60–70% of the creatine in our bodies exists as free creatine, while the rest is present in a phosphated form. 3
Creatine has been shown to improve athletic performance, making it one of the most popular supplements among weightlifters. Creatine enhances physical performance during short, repeated, high-intensity exercise when taken in doses of at least 3 grams per day. *
Since its introduction to the sports nutrition market, creatine has been one of the most extensively studied performance-enhancing substances. 1
Most of the creatine in our bodies is found in the muscles, with smaller amounts also present in the liver, brain, heart muscle, bones, and testicles.
Our bodies also produce the amino acids arginine, methionine, and glycine in the liver and kidneys at a rate of approximately 1 gram per day. For athletes, this amount should be supplemented with an additional 3–5 grams per day to achieve the desired extra effect. Creatine can be a good choice for strength sports, combat sports, or track and field, where explosive, short-term exertion plays a major role.
It can be taken by both women and men, provided the recommended usage and warnings are followed.
In addition to improving athletic performance, the positive physiological effects of creatine are being studied in many areas of life, making it a versatile supplement for everyone.9
