What Is Cortisol and What Causes High Levels of It
The uncontrolled, long-term stress we face is called “chronic stress.” More “stress hormones” are released, and if the levels of these hormones remain high over the long term , it contributes to weight gain, especially in the abdominal area, disrupts the ability to fall asleep and the quality of sleep, and causes emotional instability, irritability, and difficulties with concentration or memory.
Acute and Chronic Stress
When the body is exposed to acute stress due to a fear for one’s life, cortisol levels rise rapidly, which helps activate various defense mechanisms in the body. We call this responsethe “fight-or-flight” response. The heart rate accelerates, muscles tense up, our senses become heightened, and the body stores enough energy in case of danger. However, the chronic stress we commonly experience on a daily basis does not threaten our lives, and yet cortisol levels rise in this way several times a day. The result is a range of issues that cause physical symptoms (fatigue, pain, weight gain, digestive problems, insomnia) and form the basis of mental health issues (mood swings, anxiety).
What are the signs of high cortisol levels?
They manifest physically (weight gain, cravings for sweet and salty foods), but also
asmood swings, worry, sadness, stress, and anger—all on a daily basis. Initially, they appear as emotional fluctuations, where we react inappropriately to various situations. Later, this behavior subsides, and anxiety and depression may set in;burnout and apathy are also not uncommon.
How can we manage high levels of stress?
To reduce stress, it’s important to incorporate regular exercise, deep-breathing techniques, or yoga into your daily routine; this helps the body and mind release tension. Quality sleep is also essential for the regeneration of the body and mind.
What causes chronic stress?
- Tension headaches
- It disrupts sleep and causes subsequent fatigue during the day
- It triggers digestive problems, such as stomachaches
- It leads to overeating and weight gain
- A reluctance to exercise and be physically active
- It contributes to social isolation
- Cholesterol levels rise
Ashwagandha Extract for Mental Calm
Ashwagandha is one of the best-known adaptogens in Ayurveda; it supports sleep and overall mental health. It also contributes to improved cognitive functions such as memory⁴and concentration, making ashwagandha the best natural supplement for students, those in mentally demanding professions, or older adults.

What does the designation KSM-66 mean?
The designation KSM-66 for Ashwagandha is an abbreviation that refers to a specific type of ashwagandha root extract produced with an emphasis on quality and standardization. This extract is produced using a patented process that involves using only ashwagandha roots (no leaves or stems) and water extraction without the use of alcohol. The KSM-66 extract is standardized to a high content of withanolides.
- Ashwagandha has the highest number of certifications among botanical plants
- The root extract with the most research and clinical studies
- Contains the highest percentage of withanolides (over 5%) of all available branded extracts
- Produced using a unique “Green Chemistry” process, without alcohol or synthetic solvents
- Studies focus on the roots, not the leaves, which is why it is produced exclusively from the plant’s roots
Rhodiola extract standardized to 1% salidroside
Rhodiola is also an adaptogen that has a beneficial effect on mental performance. A study conducted in 2009 tested the impact of rhodiola on people suffering from stress-related fatigue. They found that repeated administration of rhodiola counteracts fatigue, which enhances mental performance, particularly the ability to concentrate. In addition to its mental benefits, rhodiola also supports our cognitive abilities.8

A phospholipid and an important component of cell membranes
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid and an important component of cell membranes, particularly in the brain. This lipid is essential for proper cell function. It occurs naturally in foods such as soybeans and fish. In our Cortisol Stress Support, phosphatidylserine is derived from non-GMO soy lecithin.
Calming, relaxation, and support for mental alertness
Green tea is rich in L-theanine and is renowned for its positive effects on cognitive and mental health.⁸ It can induce a state of relaxation without causing drowsiness, supports alertness, and boosts both physical and mental energy.⁹

For maximum quality, we’ve chosen magnesium bisglycinate
In cases of chronic stress, feelings of nervousness can set in as soon as you wake up in the morning, often making it difficult to manage daily responsibilities, including our productivity. Magnesium reduces fatigue and exhaustion, making it a great support during stressful periods. Magnesium bisglycinate is an organic form of magnesium that offers the highest bioavailability (it is easily absorbed by the body), thanks to the binding of magnesium to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Glycine forms a sort of “clamp” that protects the magnesium until it reaches the small intestine, thereby enhancing magnesium’s effectiveness.
