Some love it, others hate it.

Do you know that feeling when your skin starts to tingle a few minutes after drinking your pre-workout? That’s beta-alanine making its presence known. People often assume that the supplement is working because of the tingling sensation. But that’s not proof.

It’s just a side effect of beta-alanine that intensifies with the dose. Judging the effect based on that is nonsense—a stronger tingling sensation doesn’t mean a higher-quality product, just as its absence doesn’t mean you’ve got flour in the bottle.

With pre-workout supplements, you decide whether to drink them fifteen or thirty minutes before your workout. With beta-alanine, that’s not how it works. Anyone expecting a caffeine-like energy boost from it is taking the wrong dose. It rightfully belongs in your daily routine, just like creatine. To be clear, it’s not a waste to include it in your pre-workout, but if you don’t take it regularly, don’t expect much from it.

The reason is simple: beta-alanine, together with the amino acid histidine, creates carnosine in your muscles—and that doesn’t happen in a single afternoon, but gradually. Week after week. Increased carnosine stores come in handy especially when your muscles start to hate you and scream, “Enough already!” At that moment, you decide whether to give up. Beta-alanine will help you keep going.

Appetite grows with food. So does carnosine.

How to take it? Feel free to mix the powder into your food. And if you’re drinking it, don’t take it on an empty stomach. Studies show that when taken with food, beta-alanine produces more carnosine in the muscles than when taken between meals. (1)

The daily dose is 4–6 g, or roughly 1/2 to 3/4 of a scoop. Want to saturate your muscles faster? Aim for the upper end of the range. And if the tingling bothers you, split your daily dose into several smaller portions (e.g., 4× 1–1.5 g).
