Liposomes are made from pure phospholipids isolated from sunflower lecithin. They can range in size from a few nanometers to tens of micrometers. When combined with water, phospholipids form microscopic structures with a central cavity filled with water, surrounded by a phospholipid shell. Other molecules, such as vitamins or glutathione—which we need to easily absorb into the body—can then be dissolved in the water at the center of the phospholipid. And while hydrophilic (water-attracting) molecules can be held inside the encapsulated core, hydrophobic (water-repelling) substances can dissolve into the phospholipid membrane itself—in this way, liposomes can transport both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules. It is precisely because of these unique properties that they are utilized both by Mother Nature—for example, in breast milk—and by specialized manufacturers in the production of medications and dietary supplements.

The main benefit of using liposomes for the transport of micronutrients is that the liposomes themselves are not broken down by the digestive process as they pass through the digestive tract. With conventional dietary supplements, the body very often breaks down many complex molecules before they are absorbed, or simply cannot absorb them easily enough, or they are subsequently metabolized and broken down by the liver, so their overall bioavailability is greatly reduced.

In contrast, thanks to their stability and ideal size, liposomes are absorbed without any problems. But that’s not all. Another difference lies in the faster route by which liposomes enter the bloodstream and reach the cells. Thanks to their specific molecular form, liposomes are absorbed via the lymphatic system, passing directly into the bloodstream through the thoracic duct. This is what sets them apart from traditional vitamin and mineral supplements, which first enter the liver, where they are metabolized, and only then enter the bloodstream.

However, liposomes take absorption even further. They help transport active molecules directly to cellular processes where micronutrients are needed in large quantities. The phospholipid bilayer of the liposome is able to fuse with other bilayers, such as the cell membrane itself—and in this way, the liposome’s contents (vitamins or other beneficial substances) are transported directly into the cells.
